Pacha Payaru Thoran / Green Gram with coconut

This is a tasty and a mild flavoured  side dish which is served with Kanji ( Rice Gruel ) and Puttu of Kerala. Whole Green Gram  / Moong is used to make this recipe. You can soak the Green gram for an hour or so for it to get easily cooked.

Ingredients needed for Pacha payaru Thoran
1 cup whole Greengram / Moong
a pinch cumin seeds
¼ tsp turmeric powder
3 garlic flakes
1 green chilli
1 cup  fresh coconut, grated
Salt to taste

For the seasoning
1 tbsp refined vegetable oil
½ tsp mustard seeds
1 dry red chilli, broken into 3 pieces
A few curry leaves

How to prepare Pachapayaru Thoran:
The green gram may be lightly roasted for two minutes before cooking. This prevents it from getting mashed.
Wash and clean the beans and pressure cook just for a whistle. Simmer for about 2-3 minutes and put out the fire.
When the cooker cools, open and put on high flame till the grams get dry.
Crush  together cumin seeds, turmeric powder, garlic, green chilli and grated coconut.
Mix the ground ingredients together.
Just before the water evaporates in the pressure pan  add the ground ingredients into the pan and mix well. Cover and simmer.
When  the nice aroma comes, stir gently using the handle of the ladle and let it dry without getting mashed. Add salt and mix well.
Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds. A chilli and curry leaves and fry lightly. Add to the thoran. Mix well. Serve with Puttu or Kanji.
