Mah Ki Dal / Kali Dal


Ingredients needed for Mah Ki Dal / Kali Dal
1 cup whole black gram
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 tomatoes / 1 cup, pureed
2-3 garlic flakes crushed
1 inch ginger crushed
1 green chilli, finely chopped
1 tsp coriander powder
½ tsp cumin seeds
½ tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp red chili powder
¼ tsp garam masala powder
1 tbsp oil / ghee / butter
3 to 4 cups of water
salt to taste
chopped coriander leaves for garnishing

How to prepare Mah Ki Dal / Kali Dal?
Clean and wash the whole black gram with skin / sabut urad and soak it in water for an hour. Drain and keep aside.
Heat ghee in a pressure pan, add cumin seeds, chopped onions. Fry the onions till golden. 
Add the crushed ginger-garlic or ginger-garlic paste.
Add the pureed tomatoes and mix well. Stir nicely till they blend well.
Now add the all the dry masala powders and chopped green chilies.
saute till the oil starts to leave the sides of the pan.
Now add the soaked dal, salt to taste and the water. Mix well.
Cover the pressure pan and cook for about 20 minutes or till the lentils have become soft and buttery. If it  is still not cooked well, continue to pressure cook for a few more minutes.
If the dal looks thin, simmer without the lid, till the gravy reaches the desired consistency.
Garnish mah ki dal with chopped coriander leaves.
serve mah ki dal hot with naan, kulcha, rotis or plain boiled rice.

Notes
You can also make it spicy by adjusting the amount of red chili powder and green chilies used.
You can also prepare this dal thick or thin according to your taste.
