Ingredients needed for Muthira Upperi
1 cup muthira / kollu
1 tbsp coconut oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
2 red chillies broken into bits
2 tbsps small onions chopped
1 tsp ginger chopped
few curry leaves
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp chilli powder
Salt to taste
How to prepare Muthira Upperi?
Wash and soak Muthira / Kollu / Horsegram overnight or for at least 5-6 hours.
Pressure cook for about 10 minutes on simmer flame after the first whistle.
The gram should not get mushy. Drain out the water.
Heat oil in a fry pan. Splutter mustard seeds and add red chillies.
When the chillies are brown add curry leaves and small onions and saute till the onions get golden.
Add turmeric powder and the chilli powder. Mix well.
Add the cooked and drained muthira to the pan. Add salt to taste and mix well.
Cover and simmer for about 5-7 minutes stirring now and then.
If you like you can add some fresh grated coconut to it and mix well.
Serve hot with rice, moru curry and pappad.
